Online learning can be fun

The client asked for a slide deck to help their contractors learn capacity planning at their own pace. As the instructional designer on this project, I realized slides wouldn’t do the trick. It was time for me to get good at Articulate Storyline. This excerpted version of the online training shows some of the fun we added.

Context

Using the Addie model and Agile development, I worked closely with the stakeholder to design a course that took people through the benefits and methods of capacity planning. We included a screencast of an internal planning tool and knowledge checks along the way. The course was hosted on the team’s learning management system (LMS) and became an essential onboarding component.

My role

My role included:

  • Working with stakeholders to conduct needs assessment and define approach.

  • Developing the style and brand.

  • Writing scripts.

  • Designing slides and interactions in Articulate Storyline.

  • Developing screencasts using Camtasia.

  • Collaborating with motion graphics editor to develop film elements.

  • Ensuring accessibility of content.

  • Working with editors and stakeholders to do quality assurance.

  • Packaging the course for LMS.

Additional online learning projects include:

  • I developed six online design courses targeted at non-designers. This included shooting and editing interviews with professors for each topic.

  • Using Articulate Storyline, I developed eight courses for nurses learning Epic Systems.

  • Using Articulate Rise, I developed multiple courses for Microsoft Customer and Partner Solutions.
